Woohoo!!! I am now a certified Art Clay Silver Level 2 instructor!
I just got word, I passed the judging!
Technically, I am now certified to teach Certification courses, not just the basics!
There are only two of us in the Philippines who are Level 2 certified!
But I doubt I'll be teaching anytime soon.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, read here and here.
I'm so happy!

Question: Is it crazy to go to Divisoria after lunch on a Sunday?
Hehe.
We ran out of paperbags. I need to buy from Tabora St.
I'm already imagining the chaos. Has anyone tried going to Divi on a Sunday, during the Christmas rush?
We didn't have time to go earlier. :( Super busy.

We are super thankful
The past few weeks have had their ups and downs, but I am counting my blessings.
This week, I haven't had a good night's sleep. But this only means we have been busy busy busy.
Today we were featured on GMA7's Unang Hirit!
Super big thank you Ate Sandy of The Reading Room for the opportunity. :)
I wasn't able to watch though coz I fell asleep before the segment aired(because I did another all-nighter, trying to make stuff for a mag photoshoot).
What a crazy, super hectic week!
We also did a big photoshoot today, but we can't gush about it yet. Crossing my fingers everything turns out well.
Plus we got invited to join a bazaar tomorrow, for free! I hope I wake up super early. I am really tired and I want to rest already, but I can't sleep.
Thank you Lord for the blessings you are showering us!

French-inspired clay jewelry

If the Moroccan-inspired jewelry were simple clay medallions set on brass filigree, these new French-inspired pieces feature photo-transfer polymer clay tiles wrapped with filigree.
At first, I came up with simple photo-transfer tiles, like the ones I used to make when I was starting out. But I found them boring, and I wanted something new this time.
I decided I wanted them to look like delicate vintage cabs and cameos. The challenge was to make the tiles look luxurious, and it's hard to do that with polymer clay.
I set them on brass filigree, like what I did in the Moroccan collection, but the tiles looked out of place. So I tried something different - wrapping them in filigree instead of simply setting them on top of it. I think I finally got the look I was going for.

I became a mom
Here's another reason why I went MIA: Izzy.
No, I didn't get preggers. lol. I bought the cutest little Maltese puppy. A gift from Marco for my 24th birthday. :)
I got her when she was 3 months old. She was super skinny and was really smelly when I got her. Kawawa! The old owners didn't give her regular baths, boo!
I named her Izzy, no - not after the Grey's Anatomy character, but because of her frizzy fur, especially around her neck.
I try hard to keep her frizz-free. hehe.
She's turning one year old on December 5.
Izzy is super active. She likes to wrestle. The only time she's not hyper is when she's asleep. Lol. But when she's sleepy, she mellows down and wants to cuddle.
Sometimes I think she doesn't know she's a dog. She stands everytime she wants something (like her toys on the table, or when she wants to be carried, or when she wants to be let out of the room). She asks for her bag when she sees I'm getting dressed - stands and tries to drag the bag out from wherever it's hidden.
She's super funny too. She likes to sleep in the weirdest position: on her back with her head bent towards her tummy. I should probably take a photo next time.
She goes crazy when she sees me preparing my blanket before I go to sleep - she'd run under it and just stay there until it covers her. She then playfully bites me from under the covers.
Crazy pup.

Total Girl Nov 09 feature

A couple of months ago, I was excited to receive an email from Total Girl magazine saying they read the Our Awesome Planet feature, and they'd like to feature the new cafe for their "So Hot Right Now" section. They were going to bring a young TG reader to the shop to do a review on our shop offerings and services.
I was super excited, but scared too, because of the review!
So I was very happy when I saw page 8 of this month's TG issue!
Here's an excerpt from the review:
"Famous for their pendants and charms that look exactly like cute cupcakes and other sweet treats... it's the sweetest accessory shop in the Metro!" - Maita de Jesus, Total Girl Magazine Editorial Assistant and Disney's Princess Magazine Editor in Chief
"[This cafe] is so cool because you can be creative in making and decorating your own accessories..." - Nina Isabel, 11 years old, TG reader
Grab a copy of Total Girl November 09 ish to read the entire feature.
Special thanks to the writer, Ms. Maita de Jesus and the photographer, Dakila Angeles.

Which wireless broadband network do you use?
Hello friends!
Please help. I'm trying to get wireless broadband for the shop (because DSL for business establishments is too expensive).
Which network is the best considering signal (in Cubao), customer service support, and reliability?
I've been hearing the globe network (globe tattoo) isn't too reliable raw. How true?
Sun broadband wireless naman looks promising, but I've been reading bad stuff about it rin.
I hope someone can share their opinion.
Thanks!

My studio featured in Real Living Oct 09

I revamped my workstation (at home) earlier this year, and if you've been reading my blog over at Confessions of the Chronic Crafter, you've probably seen pictures.
The photos got the attention of Managing Ed Tisha Alvarez, so they trooped to my place in Pasig last July for a photoshoot.
This month, Real Living features 3 creative spaces, and my small livingroom-turned-craft room is one of the featured spaces, along with Team Manila's studio in Makati, and designer Enan Almado's atelier. So happy!
My walls are actually tiffany blue, not turquoise. hehe.
Thank you Real Living for the cool feature. Special thanks to Managing Editor Tisha Alvarez, Style Editor Coni Tejada, and photographer/Lomo King At Maculangan! :)
More photos from my other computer to be uploaded later.
(Hoping to get copies of the outtakes from the shoot)
Please grab a copy or Real Living Oct. 09! :)
Mydesignfolder Blog Feature

Lampworking: making glass beads
Here's another project I've taken on those months I've gone MIA.
Remember early this year, I posted a hint here that I was working on a new material? hihi. Well I actually started lampworking.
Lampworking is an ancient art form. It is the art of melting glass on a flame, and manipulating it using gravity and tools. It became popular in Murano, Italy in the 14th century.
Early lampworkers melted glass using an oil lamp, thus the term lampworking. Today, it is called flameworking, as we now use a torch.
I bought the glass way back in January 2008, but only got to work on them February 2009. lol.
It's so friggin scary and exciting, it's like my own private roller coaster.
I never thought creating a glass bead could be so complicated. I'm still a long way from creating decent beads.
Anyone else into lampworking? I'd love to exchange notes, I badly need guidance! I suck!
Will blog about this when I have time. (Adding it to the long list of things I need to blog about. When will I blog again, I wonder. sigh)
Before you ask, i'm not selling yet. I'm still waiting for my kiln, so I can anneal the beads properly. Without proper annealing, the glass could break easily. So my beads have been patiently waiting for 7 months.
Watch out for glass cupcakes! :)

The cupcake "solitaire"
Just wanted to share.
I had so much fun working with silver* today!
This is the first time I am opening my toolbox after the silver class. Sometimes, it's hard to work alone. Especially when you have so many questions, no resources available on the internet, and your teacher is in Japan. lol.
So today, a couple of my batchmates and I got together in my still-unfinished studio in Cubao Expo, to try and work on our thesis projects (lol, more like assignments for Level 2 certification, actually).
Here's one of the projects I was able to finish today.

We are required to create a simple ring with stone setting, carving, and oxidizing. And it should be a perfect size 13.
I came up with a simple solitaire, but instead of a diamond, I made a teeny tiny cupcake with a synthetic pink stone (cherry) on top.
It sounds and looks so simple, but it took me the entire day to finish a single ring.
I was totally stuck on the design, I couldn't translate my ideas into something tangible, so I resorted to my time-tested favorite. Sigh, I know, cupcake again??
I promise to do better next time. In the meantime, I am enjoying my first ever silver cupcake.

*eco-friendly, recycled silver! from film!

Fine silver and 22k gold jewelry
Here's one of the million things I did the whole time I was MIA.
I trained under a Japanese artist (along with four other women), and created fine silver and 22k gold jewelry. I am now a certified Art Clay Silver instructor (basics only).
I have no time to teach yet though, as I am currently trying to finish my "thesis" projects, which will be sent to Japan and will undergo judging. Wish me luck! If I pass the judging, I get to teach Certification courses, which will allow me to train other instructors.
Thanks dad, for sponsoring me. labyu. hehe.
More photos, and a blog post soon.

Shop 54, Cubao Expo
See map here.
Shop hours
Tues to Thursday: 12nn to 8pm
Friday: 12nn to 9pm
Sat and Sunday: 10am to 9pm
We're still on soft opening mode. Grand opening moved to second or third week of September.
The first of its kind in the country, The Beadlady Craft Café and Art Studio is a venue where crafters and artists can shop for special materials, create unique beaded jewelry and works of art in an inspiring studio, and hang out with other crafters, all the while sipping a hot cup of native Barako coffee and enjoying dishes whipped up by our chef.
The Craft Café is not your ordinary craft store. A one-stop-shop, it houses five different sections to serve a crafter’s needs: a craft store, a café, a gallery, a mini library, and a workshop/studio.
The Craft Store and Café
Well-stocked shelves of carefully handpicked craft supplies await you in the first floor. Get visually stimulated by our ice cream parlor/French café-inspired little shop where the selections are carefully edited with your needs in mind. We specialize in beading and polymer clay art, but we also carry a few scrapbook supplies and rubber stamps.
A little seating area is provided where you can plop down with your purchases and get creative. Let our freshly brewed Batangas coffee, sumptuous meals, and desserts keep you company.
The Handmade Gallery
On one wall of the café is the Handmade Gallery, where a carefully curated collection of handmade jewelry and home accessories are on display. On the other wall is a gallery of paintings and prints by our young resident artist.
The Mini Library and Art Studio
Upstairs is a well-equipped studio (opening in September) where crafters are given access to tools and equipment. Different craft workshops are offered, covering topics such as polymer clay art, print making, wire working, resin bead making, Art Clay Silver, and others.
A mini library is set up on one corner, featuring a collection of different craft books and magazines available for you to browse.

Shop 54, Cubao Expo
Gen. Romulo St., Cubao
Quezon City
(Look for the all-white shop with the red door!)
